Meanwhile back in London Lydia has been finding out what it would be like to attend Miss Chase’s School for Girls. After the church service, the day following Bennet sisters’ weddings, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet had dropped Lydia and Georgiana off at the school. Lydia would stay one week with Georgiana at Miss Chase’s, get acclimated, meet with the headmistress, play sports, attend classes. Then late Sunday morning, the Bennets would send someone to pick her up, because the following week was exam week and the students, including Georgiana, would all be studying.

Lydia soon foresaw the difficulty she would encounter in the class work. Unlike all four of her sisters, Lydia had seldom paid much, if any, attention to her father’s lessons, even though she had been introduced to the same high school curriculum as each of her older sisters. In fact Lydia sat in on the class work with Kitty, until Kitty left for Miss Chase’s three years ago.

Lydia just did not do the homework in math, read the science lessons, practice the piano, enjoy reading the famous works of literature or care about the history of Great Britain, Europe or the United States. In fact Lydia had never turned in an assignment, so when Kitty left for Miss Chase’s for her last two years of formal education, Mr. Bennet had given up his classes. Lydia did not wish to learn, and he had thoroughbreds to monitor and a farm to run.

Her incentive to go to Miss Chase’s was of course not learning. It was rather her only option to avoid a job at the library or some other equally mundane office job. Also Lydia had been told by her parents that her shopping trips were over, if she chose work rather that study at Miss Chase’s. She could only buy what her own salary would purchase from now on.

So it was that Lydia set out that week to make a good impression on Georgiana, her student friends and especially Miss Chase. Of course since Miss Chase had been very fond of Miss Katherine, she, having no knowledge of Lydia’s poor academic attitude, assumed the brilliant Mr. Bennet had prepared Miss Lydia, as he had Miss Katherine.

Oh, would she be surprised next semester!

Lydia hoped to meet some gentlemen while in London, since both Kitty and Mary would be living there during her first and hopefully last semester. Of course Jane would be back in Hertfordshire at Netherfield and Elizabeth in Derbyshire at Pemberley. This was actually positive news for Lydia. Her two older sisters were more attune to Lydia’s lack of interest in anything scholastic. And even though of course, Mary and Kitty also knew, they would be very occupied becoming mistresses of their new mansions. Lydia would just be invited for week-end parties.

“All my sisters have mansions. I want one too. I am going to insist that they include me – well, Georgiana and me – in their week-end social life. Since I’ll be in London, maybe, just maybe, one semester will be enough,” Lydia planned.
